Somalia is famously known as the nation of poets because poetry and oral literature are integral parts of Somalis culture. However, much less known to the rest of the world is Somali folklore dance. Dance is found in every society in the world and Indian dance is one of the most ancient surviving forms. There are 12 folklore dances in Somalia some go back as far as ancient Egyptian times.
This workshop will explore Somali traditional dances from around Somalia, including Jaandheer, Dhaanto, Wilisako, Hirwa, Seylaci, Buraanbur, and more. Instruction is by former dancer and expert of Somali dance, currently living in Belfast Mr Baalbaal.
